[Shinzon is not happy. Not happy at all. He's in a lot of pain, but he is really accustomed to fighting bodily agony, so the only emotion he's sending out is rage.]

Where is he?

[For all those poor schmucks in the infirmary, Shinzon is puling off whatever bandages he has around his neck, intent on getting the hell out of there.]

I am a clone. [He pressed his lips together and shifted to lay down, moving gingerly.] A failed experiment. My cellular structure was breaking down.

[Kahlan had no idea what any of that meant.] How is that possible?

I was made to age rapidly at the press of a button, so that I would replace the man I was cloned from. At thirty, that button should have been hit; when it was not, my body broke down, incapable of sustaining it.[His voice was tense and terse, but he made the effort to sound detached.]

I was falling apart. My organs would have started failing catastrophically.

[She didn't reply. Really what could you add to that anyway? She just nodded and let him know she'd listen.]

It had an affect on my appearance. And it felt something like this. [He shifted on the bed, one hand holding his stomach, the other resisting the urge to touch his neck.]

What affect did it have?

[He ran a hand over his skull again.] Veins stuck out. Most of them had a green hue. It was...unpleasant.

[Well, that sounded gross. But Kahlan didn't allow any thoughts of that nature to show on her face.] I'm sorry.

[It was totally gross.] It doesn't matter.

Well, at least you don't have to worry about that now. [She was trying to be optimistic.]

Clearly. [Pft. Optimism.]

You aren't worried it might happen again..are you?

[Obviously she knew he'd checked for that with McCoy's device, but that didn't mean he didn't think it was entirely impossible.]

I thought of it, but for it not to have manifested itself would make it seem unlikely. Still...[His hand tightened on his stomach against that pain, and he swallowed thickly.] I don't understand why it has not.

[Kahlan didn't have an answer for him. She did notice, however, that he continued to clutch his stomach.]

How badly are you hurting, Shinzon?

I am not, [he grated out between clenched teeth. Which was a lie, of course, so he added,] It's manageable.

Are you sure? I could get Dr. McCoy, he might have something to dull the pain...

No, [he said sharply, shifting.] I'm fine.

[She rolled her eyes.]I don't believe that for a moment.

It's manageable. I don't want the doctor's drugs.

Why must you always be so difficult with everything?

I'm not being difficult, [he growled.] I'm asking you not to let them drug me.

Why not? If you could ease whatever pain you're feeling, why not do it?

Pain makes you stronger.

[She let out a breath and didn't bother with an answer to that. She could see she would get nowhere on that front.]

Will you tell me what happened between you and Alastair?

[No, she wouldn't. He grit his teeth and glanced at her.] He attacked me.
